How it all started
Originally designed for the gentle drying of herbs, the Herb.ERT drying process has been extended for the preservation and refinement of fruit and vegetables. Meanwhile, Herb.ERT is also used for special crops to dry old varieties (dye plants / medicinal herbs), and to preserve their active ingredients in the highest quality. Instead of heat is dried with water extraction!
Learn on this page why the project team - even years after the development - felt so much emotion and enthusiasm for Herb.ERT:
Eduard Paschinger - WD Austria
Already in the first conversation with Wolfgang Zemanek, the development direction was quickly defined: development of a process that mimics the natural drying - and largely preserves the aroma intensity and natural color of herbs, flowers and fruit. During the drying process, we wanted to treat the material to be dried with the care that is also a matter of course for every responsible herb and fruit grower during cultivation and care.
The herbal affinity of Wolfgang Zemanek and our know-how from decades of drying experience should finally form the basis for developing a sustainable and gentle water extraction system. Years - and many attempts later - the perfect combination of technology, hygienic-optimal dry-stock material and an efficient plant control system was developed for series maturity.
Bernhard Kastner - KASTNER MEDIA
When the development team contacted me for advice on a future marketing strategy for Herb.ERT, I was excited about the idea. Through my roots in the Waldviertel and the philosophy of my father Adi Kastner, who may be described as one of the pioneers in the Austrian cultivation of special crops, I have been influenced from childhood with the responsible use of our resources and the love of nature. For me it is not a classic product marketing that we deny with Herb.ERT - but a project. A project that we take care of heart and soul, for sustainable production and development.
Wolfgang Zemanek - Bio-Kräuterhof-Zemanek & author
From childhood I was fascinated by herbs, scents and aromas. A very formative experience was my grandfather Alois, how he fertilized the herbal and vegetable beds with his valuable compost. For him, the compost was the "gold of the gardener" and plants his passion. As a result, I could not shake off the idea of occupying myself with herbs and nature on a professional basis ...
I graduated from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and trained as an agricultural engineer. After completing my studies, I finally made my dream come true and founded the herb farm Zemanek in Styria. From the beginning, the gentle drying of the herbs was a great challenge. It was always my goal to produce top-quality herbal products - it was always clear that the romantic sight of bundles of herbs drying on the attic is not the way to go here. Irrespective of the weather, I also wanted to dry larger crops in a short time. That's why I dealt extensively with various drying methods, made experiments and built my first own hot air drying plant - and wrote from these years of experience finally the textbook "drying and drying"
Every device I tested had its advantages and disadvantages. During a study trip to Italy, I got to know a system of water extraction in herbs. The benefits of this drying method quickly caught my interest. My vision of adopting this innovative drying system to establish it on my farm got me looking for a product developer. So we have not only developed a drying process for my own herb processing - but a unique, gentle system: Herb.ERT
